Fashion photography

A beautiful model and trendy clothes are surely not enough for professional fashion shootings. We show you how you can make your personal model to a star and simply perform a professional fashion shooting at home in your living room – including light sketches from our current advertisement motive!

Preparation:

The better the preparation, the more relaxed and pleasant the shooting sequence!

Think about the shots you need before you start the shooting. Do you need a chair? Or any other accessories? Always have the colouration in the back of your mind.

Clothes, matching make-up and hairstyle are obviously also of greatest importance. Before the shooting think about the ideas you would like to implement and choose the corresponding outfits beforehand.

During a shooting it is always important that the model knows what the photographer has in mind. Only then the model is able to fulfil his requirements. You should therefore discuss your imaging idea with the model. Exemplary photos, e.g. from the internet, very often are a great help.

Camera and lens:

Fashion photography is a branch of portrait photography. Here a focal length, which freezes the personal features of the mode, is most suitable, e.g. a normal to telescopic focal length, such as e.g. the walimex pro 85/ 1.4 IF lens.

To avoid alienation of the skin tone of your model, you should strictly pay attention to the white balance of your camera.

Tripod or from your hand? In case of a fixed perspective, like the one in these pictures, you can conveniently shoot from a tripod – favourably not too close to the model, so that he/she does not feed harassed. In this case a telescopic lens is very useful. If you use a cable remote trigger on a tripod is able to keep better eye-to-eye contact with the model and give instructions.

About light:

In fashion photography the focus is on model and outfit. The model should therefore clearly stand out from the background.

For our shooting we choose a white background, which is illuminated by a softbox hanging from a boom stand. The background was additionally illuminated with a VE 200 Excellence studio flash with honeycomb, to create a reflection of the floor and thus create a more lively effect. Whether the photographer should choose a softer or harder light, depends on the idea for the photo. We decide to use a natural light and therefore use a VE 300 Excellence studio flash with Beauty Dish as keylight. In addition we use a VE 300 Excellence flash with a strip light without diffuser as stray light. A reflector panel from walimex pro serves as fill-in light for the right side of the model's face and gives the skin tones a more brownish appearance.
